Fernando Santos: "Cristiano Ronaldo still has a lot to give"

Fernando Santos insists that Cristiano Ronaldo "still has a lot to give", playing down talk that the Real Madrid forward is about to retire from the international stage.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos has said that he is hopeful Cristiano Ronaldo has not played his final ever match at the World Cup finals.

The Real Madrid superstar cut a frustrated figure on Saturday evening as the European champions slipped to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Uruguay in the last 16.

Ronaldo will be aged 37 by the time the next World Cup rolls around, but following the Selecao's earlier-than-expected exit from Russia 2018, Santos insists that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner may stick around.

"Cristiano still has a lot to give to football," he told reporters after the match. "There is a tournament (the UEFA Nations League) in September and we hope Cristiano will be with us to help the players grow."

Ronaldo has now played 514 minutes of football in the knockout stages of the World Cup without scoring or providing an assist.
