Rafael Benitez: 'Initial talks over Newcastle United job have been positive'

Rafael Benitez says that initial talks over remaining in the managerial position at Newcastle United have been "positive".

Rafael Benitez has said that more meetings will take place between himself and the Newcastle United hierarchy as they look to come to an agreement over his future.

The Magpies have suffered relegation to the Championship but there is every indication that everyone associated with the North-East giants want to reach a conclusion where the Spaniard extends his stay on Tyneside for next season.

The 56-year-old told reporters: "We will have more meetings but the things that have been said have been positive and we will continue to have meetings.

"I want the same as the fans - a successful team, a strong team and to get promoted to the Premier League as soon as possible."

Benitez has taken 10 points from his nine games in charge since replacing Steve McClaren in March.
