Manchester United legend Gary Neville says that he believes the Red Devils must act more efficiently in the transfer market following their defeat to Crystal Palace.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has hit out at the club's transfer strategy following a dismal opening-day defeat to Crystal Palace.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer witnessed his side succumb to a 3-1 loss at Old Trafford on Saturday, with former Man Utd player Wilfried Zaha bagging a brace for the Eagles.

New signing Donny van de Beek opened his account for the Red Devils on the day, but the Dutchman remains United's only acquisition of the summer despite a protracted transfer saga surrounding Jadon Sancho.

Neville believes that the club must act swifter than they have done in the market so far, telling Sky Sports News: "That first half won't have settled down the Man United fans who have been demanding more activity in the transfer market.

"It's not happened yet. The club just don't seem able to get things done quickly enough or efficiently enough.

"They need a centre-back, they need a left-back and they need a forward striker. Without them, Man United are not going to close the gap. Chelsea have acted and Liverpool are acting - they are already stronger."

Solskjaer made no secret of his desire to bring in new players following Saturday's defeat to Palace.
