Sir Alex Ferguson reveals that Wesley Sneijder "is not the ideal replacement" for Paul Scholes.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that Wesley Sneijder is not the best replacement for the retired Paul Scholes.

Sneijder had been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford throughout the summer and recently admitted that a move from Inter Milan was close to happening.

However, Ferguson has claimed that only the Barcelona duo of Andreas Iniesta and Xavi are capable of filling the void left by former England international Scholes.

"Sneijder is not the ideal replacement for Scholes," he said.

"He's a fantastic player but he was not who we were looking for to replace Scholes. Only Xavi and Iniesta are comparable to Scholes."

Scholes retired at the end of last season.
