Arsenal to rival Manchester United for £35m Pau Torres?

Arsenal reportedly identify £35m-rated Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as a possible January transfer target, but could face competition from Manchester United.

Arsenal have reportedly identified Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as a possible January transfer target.

Mikel Arteta is keen to further bolster his defensive options following the summer arrival of Gabriel Magalhaes, with a number of his current centre-backs deemed surplus to requirements.

The likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Calum Chambers have all been linked with moves away, while Arteta is also looking for an upgrade on Rob Holding.

Spanish outlet Todofichajes reports that the Gunners have earmarked Torres as one of their top targets in that position.

However, they could face competition for his signature from Manchester United, who remain in the market for a centre-back themselves after shipping 11 goals in their opening three Premier League games.

Villarreal are thought to be open to offers for Torres, but are only willing to consider bids of at least £35m for the Spain international.
