Steve McManaman: Manchester United "miles away" from winning Premier League

Steve McManaman says that he has been "disappointed" by what he has seen from Manchester United this year, claiming that they are a long way off competing for the title.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman believes that Manchester United must spend a further £150m this summer if they are to mount a serious title challenge next season.

The Red Devils spent big to land an array of top-class talent last year, including Angel di Maria, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind.

Despite splashing out vast amounts of money to sign the five players, plus coughing up a further £6m to capture Radamel Falcao on loan, McManaman insists that United have a long way to go if they are to improve on their current position in fourth place.

"I think they are miles away, £150m away from winning the title," he told BT Sport. "I have been disappointed with the way they have played. I think the fact that they played so well against Liverpool and Tottenham has rescued them.

"I expected them to play much better and be closer, as in they have never ever been anywhere near challenging for the title this year.

"They have got a little bit closer at the end of the season as other teams have tailed off. So I expected them to be closer playing a better standard of football. To have no European football this year has helped them considerably."

Louis van Gaal's side, who have lost their last two games in the league, return to action next weekend when they take on West Bromwich Albion.
