Hertha Berlin downed by Freiburg in relegation battle

Hertha Berlin succumb to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Freiburg in a Bundesliga relegation six-pointer at the Olympiastadion.

Hertha Berlin succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Freiburg in this afternoon's Bundesliga clash at the Olympiastadion.

The first chance of the match fell to the hosts, with Julian Schieber collecting a Ronny pass before firing across the face of goal, but Roman Burki dived low to his left to make the save.

Freiburg then took the lead on the quarter-hour mark when a Karim Guede through ball found Felix Klaus, who bore down on goal and slotted home.

The game's tempo slowed down after the goal, with chances at a premium and both defences withstanding a number of shots from the opposing forwards.

Not long after the restart, the visitors doubled their lead as Jonathan Schmid's corner was glanced in from close range courtesy of Maximilian Philipp.

Hertha set about trying to get something out of the game and launched into a series of attacks, but Freiburg were able to see the final stages out and comfortably secure all three points.

The result means that Freiburg leapfrog Hertha into 15th place in the Bundesliga table, while the capital outfit slip to 16th.
