Chievo down Sampdoria

First-half goals from Mariano Izco and Riccardo Meggiorini are enough for Chievo to beat Sampdoria and end their five-game winless streak at home.

Chievo ended their five-game winless streak at home with a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria in Serie A this evening.

The hosts took the lead inside two minutes when Mariano Izco's shot from 20 yards took a deflection and beat the wrong-footed Emiliano Viviano at the near post.

Pawel Wszolek could have equalised for Sampdoria soon after, but Chievo then moved two in front in the 39th minute when Riccardo Meggiorini ran clear and finished under Viviano.

In the second half, Chievo limited Sampdoria's chances of getting back into the game, but Samuel Eto'o almost grabbed his first Viola goal with a long-range effort that flew just over.

The visitors did halve the deficit in the first minute of stoppage time when Luis Muriel finished Eto'o's cross and the latter then went close to a dramatic equaliser moments later.

However, Chievo held on for a victory which moves them up to 15th.
