West Ham United fought back to deservedly take home a point from a 1-1 Premier League draw with Aston Villa, although the stalemate was partially overshadowed by another injury to Tyrone Mings.
The one moment of quality in a tetchy first half was delivered by Jacob Ramsey, who latched onto a landmark Ollie Watkins assist - the striker's 100th Premier League goal contribution - to propel the hosts ahead inside just eight minutes.
However, there was serious concern for Villa skipper Mings not long after, as the centre-back initially tried to play through the pain of a new injury but eventually had to come off with tears in his eyes.
Mings's injury had a profound impact on Unai Emery's side, who were soon hanging onto their one-goal lead as West Ham threw men forward, an approach that paid dividends when Emerson Palmieri headed in a deserved leveller for the Irons.
Now unbeaten in five consecutive Premier League games, Villa remain in eighth place in the table with a four-point gap to the Champions League places, while the Irons temporarily rise to 13th above Manchester United before the Red Devils' 7pm kickoff with Fulham.

All season long, Aston Villa have struggled to perform in their first Premier League match immediately after a Champions League game, and their European hangover was on full show today too.
Emery's men had gone winless in six successive top-flight games straight after a UCL contest before Sunday's match - losing three in a row - and they could have had few complaints if it became four.
However, the hosts were well in the ascendancy before another problem for the luckless Mings, whose enforced substitution changed the course of the contest; West Ham sense an opportunity and they well and truly took it.
Graham Potter's wing-back system posed significant challenges to Aston Villa, who were undone by a back-post overload for Emerson's equaliser, and a carbon copy of that play could - and should - have led to Tomas Soucek also finding the back of the net.
The hosts may feel that there was a sense of injustice, though, as an already-booked Edson Alvarez controversially escaped a second yellow for a cynical challenge on Boubacar Kamara, moments before Potter inevitably substituted him.
As West Ham depart with their heads held high, Villa face an anxious wait to learn the extent of Mings's injury, although Sky Sports have reported that the earliest indications are that it is not too severe.

A brilliant finish from Ramsey, but a momentous contribution from Watkins! Goalscorer and assister link up brilliantly as Emery's men charge forward; Ramsey plays a crisp pass into Watkins's feet on the edge of the box, before the striker returns the favour to his teammate.
Ramsey takes the ball in his stride expertly, shrugs off Vladimir Coufal and manages to hook the ball into the far side of the net while on the way down.
Watkins's assist means that he has now registered 100 Premier League goal involvements in just 169 games, the fastest to hit that landmark since Kevin De Bruyne in 2020.

On the balance of play, it had been coming! West Ham build down the right, and Alvarez is afforded all the time and space he could wish for to bend an inswinging ball to the back post.
There stands Emerson, who is completely unmarked and meets Alvarez's delivery with a header back across goal and into the far side of the net.
MAN OF THE MATCH - EZRI KONSA

Mings's injury threw Emery's defensive plans into disarray, but Ezri Konsa constantly stood tall when Aston Villa came under the cosh, and the Lions would have surely been lamenting another loss without the efforts of the England international.
In addition to making a crucial clearance off the line, Konsa put in three tackles, three interceptions and one block, while also winning both of his aerial duels and completing 92% of his passes.

WHAT NEXT?
A colossal Champions League clash is next on the menu for Aston Villa, who are hovering just outside the top eight ahead of the visit of Celtic in Wednesday's last league phase contest.
In contrast, a West Ham side with no continental commitments have over a week to recuperate before hosting London rivals Chelsea on February 3, which also happens to be transfer deadline day.
