Paul Lambert hails "good point" against Southampton

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert praises the performance of his team, following their 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has said that he is pleased with his players following their 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The Villans took the lead through Gabriel Agbonlahor's first-half goal, before Nathaniel Clyne scored late on to earn the visitors a point.

The result means that Villa are still without a win in their last eight Premier League games, but Lambert had nothing but praise for his side.

"I thought it was a really good game against a very good side, we had a great chance to go 2-0 up but I couldn't fault the team," he told BBC Sport. "We've got six first-team players out at the minute so I can't criticise the team.

"There aren't many quicker than Gabby Agbonlahor and that ball over the top was something we tried this week in training and we thought his pace could cause Southampton problems which it did.

"It's a good point gained against a team who had swept everything in front of them aside and if you look at the money spent by these sides it's a big difference from us."

Villa are currently 16th in the table.
