The Football Association reject Sunderland's appeal against Stephane Sessegnon's red card that he picked up against Aston Villa on Monday.

The Football Association have rejected Sunderland's appeal against the red card that Stephane Sessegnon picked up against Aston Villa on Monday.

The 28-year-old was given his marching orders by referee Lee Probert for a late challenge on Yacouba Sylla during Villa's 6-1 win at Villa Park.

The Black Cats launched an appeal on Tuesday, but the FA have revealed that they have rejected the appeal.

The statement said: "At an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, Stephane Sessegnon's claim of wrongful dismissal was unsuccessful meaning the Sunderland midfielder's three-match suspension remains with immediate effect.

"Sessegnon was dismissed for serious foul play during his side's game against Aston Villa on Monday April 29, 2013."

As a result, the midfielder will now miss the remainder of the season.
