Claudio Ranieri admits that Ligue 2 promotion was the next step in his Monaco plan.

AS Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri has admitted that winning promotion from Ligue 2 is a big moment for the club, but now wants them to go on to bigger and better things.

The club, owned by Russian billionaire Dimitri Rybolovlev, were once ever-present in European competition and Ranieri has targeted qualification as the next step in his plan.

"This promotion is a great achievement," Ranieri told BeIn Sport. "I'm very happy. It was our goal since the beginning of the championship. It was the goal of the club, the president and myself, and we put this idea in the minds of players who have managed to implement it on the field.

"Monaco is a great club in Europe, and also there is a very good programme for the future. I was happy because I love to bring, to build the team, and to build slowly, slowly, and to arrive at the high level.

"To arrive in the Champions League you have to build a very strong team. At the moment I don't know if the chairman wants to build slowly, the big team, because we have some very good young players. We may want to develop these players."

Monaco were Champions League runners-up in 2004.
