Netherlands sweep 500m speed skating medals

Michel Mulder, Jan Smeekens and Ronald Mulder take three more medals for the Netherlands in the 500m speed skating final at the Sochi Games.

The Netherlands have won seven of the nine medals so far in the speed skating events at the 2014 Winter Olympics, having added three more in the final of the men's 500m on Monday.

Twins Michel and Ronald Mulder were separated by 10 minutes at birth and only teammate Jan Smeekens stopped them taking first and second, as he sneaked between the two to claim silver, just 0.01s behind Michel's time of 69.31s.

Smeekens crossed the line with his arms aloft, but his celebration was slightly premature as he was awarded silver in a breathtaking finish.

The three medals move the Netherlands to the top of the table.
