Great Britain's Liam Broady stuns Casper Ruud in five sets in their Wimbledon second-round match to reach the third round for just the second time.

Great Britain's Liam Broady pulled off one of the most spectacular victories of his career by stunning Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud in five sets in their Wimbledon second-round match.

The 29-year-old took three hours and 26 minutes to record a 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-0 triumph over the three-time Grand Slam finalist to make the third round at SW19 for just the second time.

Broady hit 56 winners compared to 42 for Ruud, who was subjected to an extraordinary fifth-set bagel, and the Briton sealed a famous win with a smooth backhand down the line.

"I would have liked to have played him back home but Centre Court Wimbledon will do as well! I was having a think about what I'd say if I won the match and I don't really know what to say now, but it's a pretty terrifying and exhilarating experience coming out on court," Broady said on the court.

"I said to my mum, she doesn't like watching, 'I've already won £80,000 this week so you can chill out!' She can make me dinner again tonight!"

Broady - who reached the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in 2022 - will vie for a spot in round four against Denis Shapovalov, who reached the semi-finals in 2021.

"Denis is a mercurial talent, he's one of the best players in the world as Casper is. He's won junior Wimbledon here, but with a crowd like this, I mean why not have a go again?" Broady added.

Meanwhile, Ruud is still yet to advance past the second round of Wimbledon, and the Scandinavian was made to pay for a catastrophic final set in which he landed just 46% of his first serves and won just a third of his points at the net.
