World number eight Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sees off the challenge of Nikolay Davydenko in Monte Carlo.

French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moved into round three of the Monte Carlo Masters courtesy of a 7-6 6-2 victory over Nikolay Davydenko this afternoon.

The opening set proved to be a close contest, with neither player able to make inroads on the other's service game.

As a result, a tie-breaker was required to determine a winner. Tsonga began brightly, claiming an early break before going on to secure a 7-3 success.

That loss appeared to hamper Davydenko's confidence and he went on to surrender his serve on two further occasions during the second set as world number eight Tsonga moved into the next round.

He will now face either Jurgen Melzer, Jesse Huta Galung, David Goffin or Nicolas Almagro.
