Home player Nicolas Mahut loses in the opening round of the French Open to Janko Tipsarevic.

Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic moved into round two of the French Open courtesy of a 6-2 7-6 6-1 victory over Nicolas Mahut this afternoon.

The two players had been due to meet yesterday, but because of the wet conditions in Paris their match was moved back by 24 hours.

When they arrived on court today, Tipsarevic started brightly and claimed two breaks of his French opponent's serve to claim the opening set in just 33 minutes.

Mahut responded during the second set, but he was unable to find a break of serve and as a result the set went into a tie-breaker. Tipsarevic gained control of that midway through thanks to a break and eventually ran out a 7-4 victor.

That handed him the initiative and he won the match thanks to just one dropped game in the third set.

The world number 12 will now take on Spain's Fernando Verdasco.
