Carla Suarez Navarro through to second round of French Open

Carla Suarez Navarro beats Monica Niculescu 6-2 6-2 to move into the second round of the French Open at Roland Garros.

Carla Suarez Navarro has moved into the second round of the French Open with a straight-sets victory over Romania's Monica Niculescu.

The Spaniard came through 6-2 6-2 in their first-round clash at Roland Garros.

Suarez Navarro began the match strongly, breaking Niculescu in her first service game to establish an early advantage. The world number 67 failed to recover from that setback as Suarez Navarro maintained her lead.

She then broke for a second time to move 5-2 ahead before serving out the set in the next game.

The second set began in a similar fashion to the first, with Niculescu giving up her serve in the opening game. Suarez Navarro capitalised on her opponent's mistakes, breaking again on her way to moving 4-0 up.

Niculescu offered some resistance when she broke in the sixth game, but Suarez Navarro recovered quickly to break immediately prior to wrapping up the match with her own serve.

The world number eight will face either Virginie Razzano or Veronica Cepede Royg in the next round.
