Maria Sharapova regains the status as world number one following her French Open success over Sara Errani.

Maria Sharapova won the French Open title for the first time in her career with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Sara Errani this afternoon.

The Russian began the final the brighter of the two players and pressed home her domination by winning the opening three games.

Despite finding her feet and claiming a break of Sharapova's serve later in the set, Errani was unable to prevent her opponent from claiming a 6-3 success on the Roland Garros clay.

Sharapova continued her dominance into the second set, overpowering the Italian to break her serve and race into a 4-1 lead.

Despite a valiant effort, Errani could do little to stop Sharapova as she took the second set 6-2 to claim her first ever French Open title.
