DJ Forbes hails "awesome" Scotland match

New Zealand captain DJ Forbes believes that his side showed "character" to hold off a Scottish fightback with just five men on the field in the rugby sevens at Ibrox.

New Zealand sevens captain DJ Forbes has expressed his belief that his side showed "character" to overcome host nation Scotland at the Commonwealth Games today.

The All Blacks held a 17-0 lead at the break, but Scotland fought back in the second half and eventually lost by just three points to the reigning Commonwealth, World Series and World Cup champions.

New Zealand's task was made even harder by two yellow cards, which left them defending with just five men in the closing stages at Ibrox.

"It was awesome. We knew [Scotland] were going to turn it on in front of the home crowd," Forbes told Sports Mole.

"There were probably a few calls that could have gone either way to be fair, which probably made the game a bit more interesting than it needed to be.

"I think being down to five and defending like we did, it's a good sign of ticking the boxes and showing the character that the boys really needed."

New Zealand cruised past Canada in the opening game of the day and will face minnows Barbados in their final match in the evening session.
