Leigh Halfpenny says that he needs to continue working hard in order to secure a place against Australia for the British and Irish Lions after his outstanding display against Western Force.

British and Irish Lions full-back Leigh Halfpenny believes that his performance against Western Force on Wednesday was one of the best kicking displays of his career.

The Wales international kicked 24 points with 11 successful kicks from 11 attempts on the way to helping his side secure a 69-17 win over the Force in Perth.

Despite his marvellous outing, Halfpenny feels that he needs to put in more hard work in order to earn a place in the side's opening Test match with Australia later this month.

"I think that's up there with the best I've kicked, there's no doubt about that," Halfpenny told the official Lions website. "I've had some games where I've managed a few but nowhere near as many as that. To kick all 11 was incredible from a personal point of view.

"But the way I see it, I've got the easy bit. All the boys are doing the hard work scoring the tries. Hopefully, if I'm selected then I can step up to the plate like that against Australia. I'll take that kind of performance all day.

"I'm so pleased with how it went. But it's back to the training ground tomorrow and that hard work starts again."

The Lions face Queensland Reds in their third match of the tour on Saturday.
