Reading manager Nigel Adkins joins Twitter

Reading manager Nigel Adkins becomes the first Championship manager to open a Twitter account.

Reading boss Nigel Adkins has become the first Championship manager to start an active social media account on Twitter.

The Royals confirmed today that @TheNigelAdkins, whose first tweet was sent two weeks ago, was indeed their manager's official account.

"The whole world is on Twitter and I'm trying to educate myself as to why people do it," Adkins told Get Reading.

"I'm not the sort of person who will just bury their head in the sand and not understand why people do things.

"I like to think I'm a very modern, forward thinking manager. Everybody does it and I wonder why, so sometimes you just have to go and find out."

Although many professional players are on the social media site, very few managers have opened accounts on Twitter.

Southampton's Ronald Koeman (@RonaldKoeman) and Swansea manager Garry Monk (@GarryMonk16) are the only Premier League bosses on the site, while Madrid duo Carlo Ancelotti (@MrAncelotti) and Diego Simeone (@Simeone) are also active.
