Over 50 fans arrested following Bristol derby pitch invasion

Police made 50 arrests following the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash between Bristol City and Bristol Rovers in September.

Over 50 arrests were made by police following the frantic scenes following the Bristol derby in September, it has been revealed.

Rivals fans invaded the pitch at Ashton Gate on the final whistle of Bristol City's 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers in the Jonstone's Paint Trophy tie.

It has now emerged that violence inside and outside of the ground resulted in 50 arrests, with three officers suffering injuries during the incident.

"Today's operation sends out a powerful message to a small minority intent on causing problems at football games," the Daily Mail quotes chief inspector Paul Mogg.

"You might think you are anonymous in the crowd and no one can see your anti-social behaviour and actions but think about it next time because 50 people in our cells had the same thought."

The clash was the first official match played between the rivals since 2007.
