Eight-time major winner Tom Watson has backed Lee Westwood to break his duck and win a major.

The world number three has been one of the world's top players for some time now, but has still yet to pick up his maiden major title, with this year's Open Championship now all but out of reach too.

However, Watson, who was Westwood's partner on the third round, has backed the Englishman to triumph sooner or later.

"Lee is a wonderful guy in every way and is a really fine player. I wish I could have inspired him with my play, I think I dragged him down with my play," said the five-time Open champion.

"Of course I see a major win in him. He's knocked at the door too many times not to win. The only advice is you just have to shoot lower than everyone else in the tournament.

"He will be there again, I expect him to win a major championship. He has a lot of talent, has a variety of shots, and hits the ball with authority and he plays a lot like I do - very fast."

Watson won the last of his eight majors as a 33-year-old back in 1983.
