Gary Player believes that the weather at the Open will suit a European player, and admits that he hopes Lee Westwood wins.

Golf legend Gary Player has backed a European player to win the upcoming Open, and admitted that he would love it to be Lee Westwood.

Despite Europeans dominating the top of the world rankings in recent times, with Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Westwood occupying the top three, Americans have won the last three major championships.

However, Player believes that the weather could play a significant role in the tournament, and thinks that it is more suited to a European player.

"If I look at what the weather man is saying this championship, in my opinion, is favouring a European player," he said.

"Anyone can win, so to try and predict winners is very difficult. However, I would love to see Lee Westwood win. He's been working hard and came so close that I think it might be his turn.

"A golf course like this is made for him because it's very narrow and he is a straight driver. Luke Donald is another who is always consistent and you don't become world No 1 for nothing."

Player, 76, won nine majors during his career, including three successes at the Open.
