Rory McIlroy hails "solid round" after Wells Fargo Championship win

Rory McIlroy admits that he was "in control" of the Wells Fargo Championship, after winning by seven shots.

World number one Rory McIlroy has said that he wanted to hit just "a solid round" to clinch victory in the Wells Fargo Championship.

The Northern Irishman set a new course record with a fine round of 61 on day three, and held off Patrick Rodgers to win by seven shots 24 hours later.

He told reporters: "I feel like as the best player in the world, I want to go at it every week and, not so much prove it, but just show that.

"The way I played yesterday really set me up to go out there today. I was in control of the golf tournament and I just needed to shoot a solid round and that was going to get me over the line."

McIlroy also became the first man to pass 20-under-par in tournament history on his way to the win.
