Rory McIlroy in contention at Wells Fargo Championship

Webb Simpson and Robert Streb take a share of the lead into the weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.

Webb Simpson shot a five-under-par 67 on day two of the Wells Fargo Championship to earn a share of the lead heading into the weekend in North Carolina.

The former US Open champion endured an ominous start at Quail Hollow on Friday, bogeying two of the first six holes, but he recovered with seven birdies to move to 10-under - level with Robert Streb.

Overnight leader Streb looked poised to retain his advantage on Friday but a bogey on 16 saw him finish on 69, two strokes worse off than Thursday.

Martin Flores and Patrick Rodgers sit two shots off the pace on eight-under, while Rory McIlroy, who also shot 67, is one back with Will MacKenzie and Phil Mickleson.

Cole Knost finished his session with his head held high after managing a hole-in-one on the par-three 17th, helping him card a round of 68 but he sits nine shots back on one-under-par.
