Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano is in the lead after an opening round 66, with American pro John Daly just behind on 67.

Spanish pro Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano has taken the lead after the opening round of the Qatar Masters, scoring three birdies in the last three holes.

America's John Daly looked set to take the advantage with a five-under-par and overall 67, but the 31-year-old Spaniard topped the board after scoring six-under in Doha.

"I would have taken level par," Fernandez-Castano told Sky Sports News. "We couldn't see the ball landing on the fairways and I just tried to keep it as low as possible.

"I think I just got lucky and holed some important putts. Putting is the most difficult thing on a windy day."

Former world number one Lee Westwood finished the day on a comfortable 71, while defending champion Thomas Bjorn struggled on the green and closed the opening round with 79.
