Preview: Bristol City vs. Wigan Athletic - predictions, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Championship clash between Bristol City and Wigan Athletic, including predictions, team news and potential lineups.

Bristol City will be looking to make it three wins from their last four in the Championship when they welcome Wigan Athletic to Ashton Gate on Sunday.

The Robins are currently fourth in England's second tier, while the travelling Latics are down in 19th.

Match Preview

Josh Brownhill's 98th-minute goal secured City a win over Charlton Athletic in midweek, a goal that meant Lee Johnson's side sit in the playoff places after 13 games rather than down in 10th.

Johnson likes to tinker with his formations and starting lineups but the Robins went for a back four against the Addicks and that seemed to work well, giving them more defensive protection while also allowing them to match the diamond employed by their opponents in midfield.

City have had real success in the wide areas this season, regularly getting in behind opposition defences to win free kicks, get corners or create chances for their tireless forward Andreas Weimann.

They have, however, often been caught out on the counter as their central defenders are not the most mobile, which could be an issue against a Wigan side who are likely to sit back and aim to soak up the home team's possession-based football.

An injury time strike also decided Wigan's game in midweek, with Derby County grabbing a late goal to edge a tight game 1-0.

Paul Cook's Latics have alternated wins and losses in their last few games, a run that has highlighted their improved home form but also their complete inability to perform away from the DW Stadium.

While they have won three in a row at home, keeping three clean sheets in the process, Wigan have picked up just one point and scored just three goals away from home this season.

Significantly, the Latics' last away win against Bristol City came back in January 2003 when they were under the management of Paul Jewell.

Wigan's main avenue for victory at the weekend will probably come through set pieces, which have been their Achilles' heel defensively this season.

Michael Jacobs's dead ball ability ensures they will always get opportunities and in Chey Dunkley and Kieffer Moore they have two big and powerful targets to aim for; Welsh striker Moore has won an average of 7.2 aerial duels per game this season.

Team News

One of the stories of City's season thus far has been the lengthy injury list that Johnson has had to work around, and that is no different for this game, with a number of first team regulars unavailable.

Jack Hunt, Adam Nagy and Tomas Kalas are all still out, while Famara Diedhiou is suspended after being sent off against Charlton on Wednesday night.

City were poor going forward in the first half of that game, so Johnson may opt to make a couple of attacking changes to up their creativity, with Kasey Palmer an obvious candidate to come into the XI for Sunday.

Wigan's squad have a largely clean bill of health at the minute but Cook will be concerned about key defender Charlie Mulgrew, who hobbled off in that game with Derby.

If the Scot is unable to feature on Sunday, former Motherwell centre-back Cedric Kipre, who came on for him on Wednesday, is expected to start in his place.

Bristol City possible starting lineup:
Bentley; Pereira, Williams, Baker, Rowe; Eliasson, Brownhill, Massengo, O'Dowda; Palmer; Weimann

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:
Marshall; Sterling, Dunkley, Kipre, Robinson; Jacobs, Macleod, Morsy; Lowe, Moore, Massey

We say: Bristol City 2-0 Wigan Athletic

Fans may be in store for a very tight game on Sunday but Wigan's dismal away form looks set to continue against a quality Bristol City side hitting some good form.
