Half-Time Report: Penalty save keeps Wigan Athletic level

Ali Al-Habsi saves a penalty to keep Wigan Athletic level with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

Wigan Athletic shared a goalless first half with Sheffield Wednesday after Ali Al-Habsi saved a penalty for the Latics at the DW Stadium this evening.

The visitors made an attacking start, with Jacques Maghoma stretching the Wigan defence with some pace down the wing, but the Owls were unable to have a shot at goal inside the opening 10 minutes.

The home side responded as Martyn Waghorn had the first good chance of the night for Wigan, but his low shot was well saved by Damian Martinez in the away side's goal.

James McClean tried to set up a chance for the opening goal with a pacy run before crossing in, but Nicky Maynard was unable to connect with the delivery.

McClean and Waghorn continued to look like the Latics' best chance of a goal, but some tight defending from the visitors ensured that they weathered the hosts' dominant spell, before coming back into contention as half time approached.

The Owls were awarded a spot kick 10 minutes before the break when Al-Habsi brought Maghoma down inside the penalty area, but the keeper made amends when he punched away Leon Best's effort from the spot.
