West Bromwich Albion move into sixth place after win over Watford

West Bromwich Albion move into sixth place in the Premier League table with a 3-1 victory over Watford at The Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion have recorded a 3-1 victory over Watford to move into sixth place in the Premier League table.

Goals from Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt and Matt Phillips were enough to secure the Baggies a third win in four outings, and they now sit above Manchester United having played a game more than Jose Mourinho's team.

Nordin Amrabat almost gave the visitors the lead as early as the second minute but Ben Foster was equal to his 25-yard strike, before Phillips hit back for West Brom with a shot which went over the bar.

However, the Baggies went ahead in the 17th minute when Evans was able to leap above the Hornets defence to head Brunt's corner into the net.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Tony Pulis's team doubled their advantage when Brunt's deflected free kick found a way past Heurelho Gomes in the Watford goal.

It was the Northern Irishman's first goal since March 2015 and his team looked for a third before half time with Craig Dawson heading over from a Phillips cross.

It was one-way traffic at the start of the second half, with James Morrison sending a half-volley just over the bar and Salomon Rondon diverting the ball just off target from a Brunt cross.

Brunt was then denied by a block by Jose Holebas but against the run of play, Watford's Christian Kabasele halved the deficit from close range.

Moments later, Amrabat nearly found an equaliser with Foster pulling off a low save before Phillips curled just wide of the post for the home side as they went back on the offensive.

Watford were dealt a blow with six minutes left when Roberto Pereyra was dismissed for reacting to a challenge from James McClean, and West Brom soon made use of the extra man with a third goal in added-on time.

It was the goal of the afternoon, too, as Phillips found the bottom corner from 20 yards to wrap up a triumph which takes West Brom's tally from the last four matches to 10 points.
