Liverpool reportedly hold initial talks over a potential deal to sign a Netherlands international as Trent Alexander-Arnold's successor.

Liverpool have reportedly held initial discussions over a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

The Reds are set to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold's services this summer after it recently emerged that he has agreed a deal to join Real Madrid this summer.

England international Alexander-Arnold has decided that it is time to try a fresh challenge instead of extending his stay at his boyhood club.

As a result, Alexander-Arnold is widely expected to join the reigning European champions once his current Liverpool deal expires at the end of June.

Liverpool academy product Conor Bradley will hope to get the chance to stake his claim to be Alexander-Arnold's long-term successor.

However, the Reds will still be keen to delve into the transfer market to recruit a right-back to compete with Bradley for a starting berth in Arne Slot's side.

Liverpool are believed to view Frimpong as a potential candidate to replace Alexander-Arnold ahead of the 2025-26 season.

A recent report claimed that the Premier League leaders have moved into pole position to sign the Netherlands international.

According to the PA news agency, via The Independent, Liverpool have held initial talks over the potential signing of Leverkusen's Frimpong.

The report claims that discussions are at an early stage despite the Reds being admirers of the Manchester City academy product.

Why are Liverpool targeting Frimpong?

Liverpool could face competition from a number of clubs, including Premier League rivals Chelsea, Manchester United and Man City.

Frimpong is similar to Alexander-Arnold in the sense that he enjoys contributing to his team's attacking play, which is perhaps why he could be a shrewd signing for the summer window.

However, the Dutchman tends to play on the right side of a midfield four for Leverkusen, helping him contribute four goals and 11 assists in 40 appearances.

Rather than operating as a wing-back, Liverpool will want Frimpong to operate on the right side of a back four in Slot's side.

The Merseyside club will be well aware that the 24-year-old has a €40m (£33.4m) release clause in his Leverkusen contract.
