FIFA: 'United States have interest in hosting 2026 World Cup'

FIFA reveal that the United States could bid for the 2026 World Cup following "staggering" levels of interest in soccer during America's run at the World Cup in Brazil.

FIFA have revealed that the United States are considering bidding to host the 2026 World Cup.

American interest in soccer has peaked following their team's run to the last 16 of the tournament in Brazil, where they were beaten in extra time by Belgium.

They previously played host to the 1994 finals, which enjoyed the highest ever attendance figures with an average of nearly 69,000, and a future tournament could be even more popular due to the "unprecedented" thirst for football now being seen on US soil.

"There is a commitment to work with US Soccer," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke told Brazil newspaper Globo.

"What we see in the United States is staggering. The audience is unprecedented, more than the NBA.

"The country has the largest level of youth soccer in the world, with 20 million young people playing. I think after 2022, they have an interest in hosting the 2026 World Cup."

Russia and Qatar have been chosen to host the next two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
