Tim Howard: Saves record 'does not matter'

Tim Howard admits that his record for most saves in a World Cup match means little to him considering that the USA 'fell short of their dream' when losing to Belgium.

USA goalkeeper Tim Howard has admitted that his World Cup record for saves in a match means little to him considering their elimination at the hands of Belgium.

The Americans saw their run at Brazil 2014 ended courtesy of an extra-time defeat to Marc Wilmots's side on Tuesday, despite Howard making 15 saves in the game.

However, the Everton shot-stopper claims that the achievement is irrelevant because of the result, adding that the US are proud of their performance but 'fell short of their dream'.

"None of that really matters to me," he told reporters. "I signed up to do that, to put my face in front of balls. If I had no saves or 20 saves it doesn't mean any more or less. It hurts when we lose.

"We dreamed and we fell short of our dream but we got out of the group of death playing well and came up against a top Belgium side.

"Hats off to the way we played. We are hungry, we have tasted what it's like to play against the best in the world and we will be back."

A group of American fans have created a White House petition for a Washington airport to be renamed after Howard.
