Uruguay's Luis Suarez undergoes successful knee surgery

Uruguay confirm that Luis Suarez suffered a knee injury playing in Liverpool's final game of the season, but will not miss the World Cup.

Uruguay officials have confirmed that Luis Suarez has undergone successful knee surgery this week, but is expected to be fit for the World Cup in Brazil next month.

There were fears that the Liverpool striker could be ruled out of the tournament after news emerged that he required meniscus surgery.

However, the national side have insisted that Suarez will not miss the World Cup, while also revealing that the 27-year-old, who scored 31 goals for Liverpool last season, suffered the original injury during the Reds' final game of the season against Newcastle United on May 11.

A statement from the Uruguayan FA said: "The Uruguayan Football Association's health department informs that yesterday, Wednesday May 21, 2014, Luis Suarez, after a normal warm-up, suffered intense pain in his right knee during some ball work. He was predicted to be suffering from pain in the meniscus of his right knee, but stable and without bleeding or hemorrhaging.

"An MRI scan was used to confirm the partial tear to the outer meniscus. This morning he underwent keyhole surgery and a small resection of the meniscus at the Medica Uruguaya hospital. No other injuries were found in the knee.

"His participation in the World Cup in Brazil has not been ruled out. As previously revealed, the player received a direct trauma to his right knee in his last Premier League game with Liverpool, last Sunday May 11, 2014, but the pain had subsided during the post-season rest that came after the league had finished."

Uruguay will play England, Italy and Costa Rica in the group phase of the World Cup.
