Preview: Tigres vs. Club America - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's Liga MX clash between Tigres and Club America, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Tigres will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the Apertura Liga MX season when they host reigning champions Club America at Estadio Universitario on Thursday.

The hosts are seeking to end an eight-game winless streak against their opponents and claim their first home victory over America since 2017.

Tigres salvaged a point from a 1-1 draw with Atlas in their last league outing after a 1-0 win over Necaxa in their opening match, leaving them with four points.

Despite scoring the second-most goals in both the previous Apertura and Clausura campaigns, the eight-time champions have struggled in front of goal so far.

New manager Veljko Paunovic, appointed in June, is tasked with improving the team's attacking potency as they target a first Apertura title since 2017.

However, standing in their way is an Club America side that defeated them in the Supercopa Liga MX just over two weeks ago and has dominated the recent head-to-head record.

Tigres have endured a difficult couple of years against America, suffering six defeats and two draws in their last eight encounters.

Their home record against Thursday's visitors is equally dismal, having failed to win in the last nine times they have hosted this fixture.

Defending league champions, Club America, were shocked on the opening match day of this campaign, losing 2-1 to San Luis for their first league defeat since April.

However, Andre Jardine's men bounced back nicely on matchday two with a commanding 3-1 victory over Queretaro in their first league game on home soil this season.

America will now be looking to record successive league wins for the first time since March when they take on Tigres on Thursday at Estadio Universitario.

But to achieve that, the Azulcremas will have to find a way to halt their poor away form that has seen them fail to win any of their last five competitive games on the road across all competitions and just one of the last eight.

Team News

Tigres have a clean bill of health with no injuries or suspension, but Paunovic might be looking to alter the starting lineup from the draw with Atlas.

Andre-Pierre Gignac, who converted the penalty in the opening day win, might be back into the side after missing the last match to play alongside Nicolas Ibanez, who scored in the last game.

Club America will remain without Illian Hernandez, who is out with a broken leg until late October, while Luis Malagon and Diego Valdes are out until the end of the month due to muscle and foot injuries, respectively.

Henry Martin scored a brace in the win over Queretaro, making it five goals for the forward in the last four encounters across all competitions.

Tigres possible starting lineup:
Rodriguez; Aquino, Pizarro, D. Reyes, Angulo; Brunetta, Gorriaran, Carioca, Cordova; Gignac, Ibanez

Club America possible starting lineup:
Malagon; Reyes, Araujo, Castillo, Calderon; Fidalgo, E. Sanchez, R. Sanchez, Dilrosun; Zendejas, Martin

We say: Tigres 1-1 Club America

Club America go into this fixture as favourites, as they have been dominant against Tigres over the years and still picked up a win against them a few weeks ago.

However, we are calling a draw for this clash as the visitors have struggled in their last few away games, while the hosts seem to have found some defensive resilience.
