Sunderland are reportedly keen for Connor Wickham to extend his contract with the club.
The England Under-21 international's current deal at the Stadium of Light is due to expire next summer, which if not extended, will mean that he can move clubs without the requirement of a transfer fee.
However, the Black Cats are determined to prevent that from happening and will begin negotiations with the centre-forward in the near future, according to the Sunderland Journal.
If no agreement can be reached, the report adds, Sunderland would consider selling the 21-year-old to ensure that they recoup some of the £8m that they paid Ipswich Town for his signature in 2011.
It is believed that Crystal Palace are among the clubs that have shown an interest in Wickham's services.
