Gus Poyet calls for summer transfer window to close before season starts

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is adamant that clubs would benefit from the summer transfer window being closed before the season begins.

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet believes that clubs should not be allowed to buy new players once the season begins.

Premier League clubs are preparing to get their campaigns underway this weekend, but the transfer window is open for business for just over two more weeks.

The debate over the transfer system has been ongoing for some time, but Poyet believes that it would be "easier" for clubs to get their squads in order before the next window opens in January.

"I am convinced," Poyet told Sky Sports News. "That will make us as a club just to start working earlier, nothing else. All the deals that would be done on August 31 [can] be done on Friday. I don't think it's something that is too difficult.

"I think we need to come to an agreement for the sake of the game and the managers and the people involved in football. I think it would be easier and more relaxing if we can start the league on Saturday with the squad that you are expecting to play at least until January 1."

Poyet has also reiterated that they remain interested in signing Liverpool forward Fabio Borini, who is yet to agree terms with the Black Cats after the two clubs came to a fee reported to be around £14m.
