Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has rubbished speculation that he offered his resignation at the weekend.
Reports surfaced on Saturday evening that the 60-year-old had decided to call time on his stint at the Stadium of Light following a 4-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
However, O'Neill has insisted that quitting his job had never crossed his mind.
"Yes, it was a bit of a surprise, really," O'Neill told reporters. "Nothing probably should surprise me in the game, but yes.
"There was nothing in it. Anybody can tweet these days. I think it happened a couple of years ago as well, something like that, a similar sort of thing. But that's the nature of it. But no, I was pretty surprised."
O'Neill took charge of the club in December 2011.
