Match Analysis: Stoke City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Sports Mole takes a closer look at the action from Stoke City's 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Stoke City earned a goalless draw at home to West Bromwich Albion this afternoon.

The result meant that the Baggies remain unbeaten in five games, while Stoke have failed to win a match during the same period.

West Brom will feel that they should have take all three points having seen Stephane Sessegnon miss two good chances and the referee wave away a big penalty claim.

Sports Mole takes a closer look at the action below to determine if the result was fair.

Match statistics:

Stoke:
Shots 9
On target 3
Possession 50%
Corners 6
Fouls 12

West Brom:
Shots 11
On target 5
Possession 50%
Corners 6
Fouls 10

Was the result fair?

In a word, no. Stoke had a 10-minute spell just before half time when they looked like they might get a goal but apart from that, West Brom were in control. The possession statistics may be a little misleading as the visitors were far more dangerous. Sessegnon really should have scored at least one of his two good chances and the Baggies should have had a penalty when Charlie Adam tripped Youssouf Mulumbu in the box.

Stoke's performance

Stoke were very disappointing. They reverted to type 'A' little bit today after finding that West Brom were very difficult to break down, and it didn't work.

West Brom's performance

The visitors produced a good away performance today. It was not a case of them peppering the Stoke goal for 90 minutes, but they were always in control and had three very good chances to score, as well as a penalty appeal that was turned down. Manager Steve Clarke will be disappointed not to have taken all three points today, that's for sure.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Youssouf Mulumbu: This award could have easily gone to Asmir Begovic for three good saves but Mulumbu was the key man this afternoon. He was everywhere for West Brom, forming an excellent defensive shield with Claudio Yacob as well as pushing forward. He deserved a penalty when fouled by Adam in the box as well.

Referee performance

Howard Webb had little to do today. The one decision he had to make, he got wrong, so you would have to say he had a bad day at the office. His assistant referee might have helped him out on the penalty decision but between them, they should have awarded the foul.

What next?

Stoke: It doesn't get any easier for boss Mark Hughes as his side face a trip to Old Trafford next, although with Manchester United's recent form, his players can go there with the pressure off and perhaps upset the odds.

West Brom: West Brom's next couple of weeks consist of winnable home games and difficult away trips. They face Liverpool at Anfield next before welcoming Crystal Palace. Then it's Chelsea away before Aston Villa at home.
