Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is reportedly ready to undergo a medical with Ajax over the coming days.

Ajax are reportedly edging closer to completing the signing of Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn.

The Netherlands international has made no secret of wanting to depart Spurs this summer, a consequence of his lack of game time last season.

Although he made as many as 25 appearances in the Premier League last season, just four of those outings came from the starting lineup.

When commenting on his future at the start of June, the 24-year-old said: "It would be nice if there was clarity soon. I just have to go play. But I want to leave Spurs now, that's for sure. Whether it is important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That's not even top priority. Though it would be nice. What's important is that I'm going to play.

"I wasn't allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn't have any problems. The last few months I was hardly looked after there. Now I want to play somewhere weekly."

The situation has since developed to an extent where Ajax have finally made a breakthrough in negotiations with their counterparts at the English side.

Reports have indicated that the Dutch outfit are prepared to pay £25.9m in order to get a deal over the line, Spurs happy to generate funds on the back of signing Richarlison for more than double that fee.

According to the Daily Mail, Bergwijn has now travelled to the Netherlands to put the finishing touches to a return to the Eredivisie.

The report suggests that the attacker is due to undergo a medical over the coming days before an official announcement is made in due course.

Ajax are allegedly confident that they will complete the transfer by Friday, Bergwijn becoming their first high-profile addition of the summer.

Bergwijn was a star in the Dutch top flight before his switch to Spurs, contributing 29 goals and 35 assists in 112 appearances for PSV Eindhoven.

While Bergwijn made appearances in three title-winning campaigns for Ajax's main rivals, he was significantly more influential during 2017-18 when he contributed eight goals and 11 assists.

Since his switch to Spurs in January 2020, just 40 of his 83 outings have come from the starting lineup, only 25 being made in the Premier League.
