Former Glasgow Rangers striker Nacho Novo scored twice as Sporting Gijon took all three points from their trip to Rayo Vallecano this afternoon.
Gijon captain David Barral put the visitors in front after nine minutes, with Novo doubling the advantage eight minutes before the break.
With the home side looking for a route back into the encounter after the restart, Gijon added their third of the afternoon on the counter-attack through Novo.
Rayo claimed a late consolation when Michu scored from close range in stoppage time.
The victory has lifted Gijon out of the relegation zone in the La Liga table.
