Martin Jol relieved to lose by just two goals at Southampton

Fulham manager Martin Jol admits that his side were fortunate to avoid a thrashing during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

Fulham manager Martin Jol has admitted that his side were fortunate to avoid a thrashing during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

Both goals came during a first half in which the Saints registered 14 shots and Fulham failed to muster a single attempt.

Speaking after the match, an underwhelmed Jol suggested that his side were so inferior that they should be pleased to have lost by just a two-goal margin.

He told Sky Sports News: "The only good thing is that we kept it to 2-0 because after half time it could've been four or five.

He added: "It's very awkward to say, but maybe, if you look back at the first half and then the result, we should be happy to finish 2-0."

The defeat at St Mary's leaves Fulham 14th in the Premier League table.
