Sheffield Wednesday demolish Birmingham City

Sheffield Wednesday hit four against Birmingham City in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday have hammered Birmingham City 4-1 in a one-sided Championship match at Hillsborough this afternoon.

The Blues could have taken the lead as early as the second minute when Jonathan Spector's cross found its way to Tom Adeyemi in front of goal, but the midfielder's header sailed harmlessly wide.

They were left ruing that early miss in the 16th minute as Kieran Lee picked out Caolan Lavery in the danger zone, and striker drilled an effort into the bottom left corner to give Wednesday the lead.

The Owls added a second in the 21st minute when Leon Best scrambled the ball home from close range after the Birmingham defence had failed to deal with a corner kick.

Adeyemi came close to pulling a goal back for the Blues just after the half-hour mark, but they were unable to open their account before the break.

Wednesday continued to apply pressure in the second half, coming close through Atdhe Nuhiu, before Best squandered an opportunity to bag his second of the game following a free kick.

They had to wait until just before the hour mark to increase their advantage, but their third came courtesy of a Birmingham player, the ball ricocheting into the visitors' net off Will Packwood.

Birmingham fell further behind 10 minutes later when Lavery pounced in the box following a corner, helping himself to his second of the afternoon.

The Blues did pull a goal back 10 minutes before the full-time whistle when Lee Novak tapped home from close range, but it proved little consolation to manager Lee Clark and the travelling supporters.
