Nuremberg relegated following defeat at Schalke 04

Nuremberg drop into the second tier of German football after losing 4-1 at Schalke.

Nuremberg have been relegated from the Bundesliga after a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Schalke 04 condemned them to a 17th-place finish.

The away side fell behind in the sixth minute following a corner, Max Meyer providing the cross for Joel Matip to nod in from point-blank range.

Nuremberg's fate looked sealed on the stroke of half time as Roman Neustadter gained possession inside the box and rifled a shot beyond Peter Rakovsky to double Schalke's advantage.

It took Schalke until the 75th minute to further extend their lead, Julian Draxler finding the back of the net from outside the box, before Josip Drmic pulled one back for the visitors in the final minute.

However, it was Schalke who had the final say, dumping more misery on their opponents in stoppage time courtesy of Chinedu Obasi's close-range strike.
