Roma announce that they have been given the go-ahead to begin building their new 55,000-capacity stadium

Roma have been given the go-ahead by the Italian authorities to begin building their new 55,000-capacity stadium.

The Stadio della Roma, which is aimed to be completed in time for the 2020 season, will be built in the Tor di Valle area in the south of the city.

Roma currently share Stadio Olimpico with city rivals Lazio and have been unable to improve the facilities or make money from stores, restaurants or events as they are only tenants.

The news was announced on Tuesday evening after the Italian side beat Qarabag 1-0 to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League by winning Group C.

"I'm delighted because I know what this decision could mean for Rome itself, for our club's future and for our fans – and we want to give them the home they deserve," said club president James Pallotta in a statement released by the outfit.

Building work is set to begin in April or May next year with construction predicted to take 26 to 28 months.
