Mick McCarthy's odds tumble for Ireland job

Odds for Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy to be the next Republic of Ireland manager have plummeted, with one bookmaker going as short as evens.

Odds for Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy to be the next Republic of Ireland manager have plummeted.

When Giovanni Trapattoni was initially dismissed a little over a month ago, McCarthy was set a price of around 10/1 and has floated near that mark until recently, where he is now as short as evens with SkyBet for the job.

When asked about the position last month, McCarthy said that Martin O'Neill, who he is now joint-favourite with at the bookies, was a "shoo-in" for the job.

The FAI's high performance director Ruud Dokter recently said that finding a new man would take time.

Ireland, who have no chance of reaching Brazil 2014, play their final World Cup qualifier at home to Kazakhstan tonight under interim manager Noel King.
