Thierry Henry eclipses David Beckham as the top earner in Major League Soccer after Beckham took a wage cut to remain with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Thierry Henry has eclipsed David Beckham as the highest-paid player in the MLS after Beckham took a wage cut to remain with the Los Angeles Galaxy, according to figures released by the players' union.

Henry, 34, earns $5.6m (£3.6m) playing for the New York Red Bulls while ex-Manchester United man Beckham has gone down from a $6.5m (£4.1m) salary to $4m (£2.6m) this season.

Former Arsenal frontman Henry's teammate Rafael Marquez is now the second highest paid in the American league on $4.6m (£2.9m).

Henry has scored 25 goals in 45 appearances since moving to New York in 2010.
