Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich: How do both sides compare this season?

Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League second-leg showdown between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Sports Mole takes a look at how both clubs compare across all competitions so far this season.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich do battle in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

The two European giants could not be separated in last week's first leg when they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.

Vinicius Junior gave Real Madrid a first-half lead before goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane turned the game on its head within the space of just four second-half minutes. However, Vinicius came to the rescue for Los Blancos and converted an 83rd-minute penalty to keep the tie delicately poised.

Ahead of Wednesday's enticing second-leg showdown in Spain, Sports Mole takes a look at how both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich compare across all competitions so far this season.

The overall records for both clubs across all competitions this season are fairly similar, although Real Madrid - who have played three games more - boast a total of 37 victories compared to Bayern Munich's 30.

Carlo Ancelotti has made his side difficult to beat this term, and as well as drawing 10 matches, they have only lost twice all season - both times on the domestic front against bitter rivals Atletico Madrid.

In comparison, Thomas Tuchel's Bayern have only drawn six times, but have notably lost a total of 10 matches in all tournaments which has ultimately had an impact on their domestic campaign.

Although Bayern have conceded 12 goals more that Real this season, the German giants have scored three more than their Spanish counterparts, and that has largely been thanks to the prolific form of summer signing Harry Kane.

Bayern's leading marksman has scored just under 40% of their goals across all competitions and twice as many as Real Madrid's top scorer Jude Bellingham, who has netted just under 20% of their team goals this term.

Leroy Sane (12) tops the assist charts between the two clubs, with Kane (11) not too far behind, while Vinicius Junior has been Real's chief creator this season with nine assists, one ahead of both Bellingham and Toni Kroos (eight).

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have a minimum of three fixtures remaining this season, but one of these European powerhouses can look forward to an additional match if they secure their spot in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium on June 1.

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have established themselves as perennial challengers for their respective top-flight titles over the years, but they have had contrasting success on the domestic front this season.

Indeed, Ancelotti's side clinched their 36th La Liga title on Sunday following a 3-0 home win over Cadiz - their 27th league victory of the campaign to move 13 points clear at the summit with four games to spare.

As for Bayern, their 11-year hegemony at the top of German football has come to an end in remarkable fashion. The Bavarians have dropped points in 10 of their 32 league fixtures so far this season - losing seven times including a 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart on Saturday - and have subsequently conceded the title to unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen, who sit a staggering 15 points clear at the top.

At the start of the season, Bayern were put to the sword 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup curtain-raiser, before they were embarrassed at the hands of third-tier outfit Saarbrucken in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, losing 2-1 after conceding a 96th-minute goal. Bayern's only hope of avoiding their first trophyless season since 2012 is to win the Champions League.

In contrast, Real Madrid have already secured a domestic double - the La Liga title and Supercopa de Espana - and are looking to end the season on a high by winning a record-extending 15th European Cup.

The only team that has got the better of Los Blancos in any competitions this term is their city rivals Atletico, who beat them 3-1 at the Civitas Metropolitano in September - Real's only La Liga defeat to date - before losing 4-2 after extra time in the last 16 of the Copa de Rey in January.

Both Real and Bayern have won seven of their 11 Champions League matches so far this season, finishing top of their respective groups before progressing to the semi-final stage. While Los Blancos enter Wednesday's second leg in buoyant mood having put together a 20-game unbeaten run in all competitions, Bayern have won just four of their last nine games and will be seeking to avoid a third successive match without a win when they travel to the Bernabeu.
