Queen of the South stay top with Dumbarton win

Queen of the South stay top of the Scottish Championship with a 2-0 win over Dumbarton.

Queen of the South maintained their 100% start to the new Scottish Championship season to stay top with a 2-0 win over Dumbarton this afternoon.

The visiting QoS had an early chance through Mark Millar, but his goalbound effort struck teammate Derek Lyle, who was stood in an offside position.

Dumbarton goalkeeper Mark Brown was called into action on 11 minutes when he got down quickly to push Andy Dowie's effort around the post as the visitors started the brighter of the two teams.

Qos went close again through Lyle, who curled a shot just wide from the edge of the area just after the 15-minute mark.

Scott Taggart was next to try his luck for Dumbarton, but his weak left-footed effort was comfortably held by Robbie Thomson in the QoS goal.

Dumbarton were claiming for a penalty earlier in the second half after the ball appeared to strike Kyle Jacobs on the arm, but referee Brian Colvin waved away the appeals.

Lyle doubled the advantage for Queen of the South when he headed home at the back post after the home side failed to deal with a cross.
