Porto boss Julen Lopetegui: 'We showed character against Basel'

Porto manager Julen Lopetegui heaps praise on his players following their 4-0 win against Basel.

Porto manager Julen Lopetegui has lavished praise on his entire team following their victory over Basel in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Portuguese giants thrashed their Swiss opponents 4-0 in the second leg of the tie on Wednesday evening to progress 5-1 on aggregate.

"You have to applaud the entire team for this fantastic performance against a very difficult opponent who came here determined to qualify," BBC Sport quotes Lopetegui as saying.

"We deserve to be in the Champions League quarter-finals even if we came through qualifying. I am very happy and very proud of my players who showed a lot of character."

Porto captain Danilo was taken to hospital during the game following an accidental clash with teammate Fabiano, but Lopetegui confirmed during his post-match interview that his skipper "appears to be okay".
